South Gwinnett’s Famous Bourbon BBQ Sauce

Make approximately 12 cups:

  • 8 c. ketchup
  • 2 c. light molasses
  • 1 ½ cup bourbon (I use Maker’s)
  • ½ c. hot pepper sauce (I use tobacco)
  • ¼ c. Worchestershire sauce
  • 8 tsp. paprika
  • 4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 4 tsp. onion powder
  • 4 dashes of hickory smoke flavor
  • ¼ c. honey
  • ½ tsp. cyan pepper
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. cumin

Bring all ingredients to a slow boil (medium heat) in a sauce pan, or pot, for 20 min. stirring continuously. Reduce heat to low and allow sauce to simmer, stirring occasionally, until it thickens—about 10-15 min. Adjust hot and sweet elements to taste, adding additional simmer time if adjustments are made.

Depending on what brands of each of the above you use, you make need to tweak this list to accommodate your recipe.

Allow to cool.
